Climate countdown – the next phase of the energy transition
Another summer, another heat record: the effects of climate change are becoming more and more apparent as the world grapples with an unprecedented series of heat waves, wildfires, and floods. The urgency of a shift to renewable energy and sustainable lifestyles has never been clearer. Countries around the world are implementing energy transition strategies tailored to their national contexts. But are things changing fast enough to reach the climate target set in the Paris Agreement to keep global heating below 1.5°C?
IKEM Academy 2020 took stock of the lessons learned in the German energy transition and connected these with other experiences of transition around the world. It investigated ways to ramp up the energy transition through new participatory mechanisms that foster support for renewables and focused on next-generation innovation and breakthroughs in renewable energy technologies like offshore wind, storage, power-to‑X and much more.
The 2020 IKEM Academy, titled ‘Climate countdown – the next phase of the energy transition’, was held online from 14–16 July 2020. The three-day multidisciplinary forum featured interactive seminars led by renowned experts.
